What are Assessments?
Assessments are an intentional and careful process that a trained clinician and client walk through together, to gather information about an underlying issue/s through reliable and research-based testing, observation, and at times, collaborative methods to determine a comprehensive examination of the individual’s functioning, strengths, and areas of need.
Based on the testing measures and assessment delivery, the assessment process will reflect an outcome that will allow an understanding of the individual’s strengths, areas of need, and functioning to integrate recommendations that may assist with increased satisfaction. An assessment may or may not result in a diagnosis as part of the outcome and recommendations to support this; thus, the intentional process and delivery method will allow for a comprehensive understanding of the results for the individual. An assessment may also be beneficial for educational purposes and provide some connection to financial subsidies should there be an eligible diagnosis.
Ages and Intent of Assessments
As such, assessments can take place for children ages to adults, please seek out a free consultation session to learn more about the assessment that may fit your need/s and the specified purpose. Assessments are an investment of time (multiple sessions), finances, and resources in your well-being, overall health, and expanding across the lifespan, so it is important to our psychologists that there are appropriate steps to support you on your unique journey.
What does the process look like?
The delivery methods of assessment at Through the Woods Psychology are ethical and unique to each client’s needs.
The assessment process begins with a consultation session and an intake interview to gather information and underlying concerns to determine the best fit for a specific assessment. The clinician will then be able to thoroughly discuss the next steps of the process for the assessment, the costs associated, and the hours and commitment of the client. At this time, the delivery method will be discussed and determined for a positive outcome with the client.
The clinician and client book the testing sessions as discussed, to measure and use standardized testing to gather outcomes of cognitive functioning and academic performance, and social-emotional functioning to develop a comprehensive understanding in the development of a fulsome report. Depending on the assessment and process discussed, there may be multiple sessions with the psychologist for the completion of the assessment.
Following testing, a feedback session will be conducted to present the findings. At this time, a conversation with the psychologist surrounding what type of report the client would like can be discussed.
How long does the process take?
Each client will have unique needs and requests for a delivery method that can vary the amount of time the entirety of the process may take. It is important to consider that there will be a minimum of 4 hours (sessions) dedicated to the process and there can be up to 16 hours depending on the assessment discussed.
Our team strives to finish this process within 4 to 6 weeks/months, however this could be longer or shorter depending on external factors. Talk to your psychologist for more information.
Can assessments be done virtually?
At Through the Woods Psychology, we believe that it is important to have in-person connectivity for the therapeutic relationship and delivery method of the outcome. Assessments are taken with great care and intentionality for reliable outcomes, and our team aims to ensure you are provided with continued care through the process.
There are parts of the testing process that require the individual to be in person for the testing, though there are aspects that can be delivered virtually, such as intake or feedback session.
